Born: 1980, Yunnan, China
Li Zesong’s artistic practice merges tradition and modernity, drawing inspiration from the cultural richness and natural beauty of his native Dali. Working primarily with shades of black, white, and gray, he constructs contemporary Chinese paintings that echo the depth and elegance of traditional ink art. His oil paintings often resemble literati landscapes, while the recurring motif of the “little red man” invites viewers into a shared space of reflection—“perhaps it’s me, perhaps it’s you.”
Li’s works advocate reverence for nature while exploring the boundless scope of human emotion and spirit. Humor, tranquility, and coexistence are recurring themes, often conveyed through his passion for pure black tones as symbols of innovation and clarity. His practice critiques the erosion of local culture while seeking to integrate Chinese tradition with contemporary global perspectives.
Blending the methods of literati painting with Western artistic approaches, Li forges a cross-cultural dialogue that situates his work at the intersection of past and present. His art reflects on harmony with nature, ecological balance, and humanity’s place within the natural world—issues increasingly urgent in today’s context.
Beyond oil painting, Li experiments with diverse mediums, including works on paper and watercolors, enriching his visual language and expanding his creative scope. Through this evolving practice, he affirms his philosophy: “While living in the present, we must respect tradition and innovate for the contemporary.”
