His gleaming, cast-iron sculptures, depicting imposing warriors, resonate deeply with audiences. Ren Zhe’s sculptures are powerful and vigorous, securing him a significant place in the Chinese contemporary sculpture scene. Born in Beijing in 1983, he studied sculpture at the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Heroes from epic myths and classical novels deeply captivated the young Ren Zhe, becoming recurring themes in his later works.
A reverence for history and literature is the core spirit of Ren Zhe’s sculptures. He seamlessly integrates traditional Chinese aesthetics and philosophy with contemporary artistic expression, exemplified by works such as *Clouds Above* (2017) and *The Realm of Perfection* (2015). The warriors in these two groups of sculptures are idealized embodiments of lofty humanistic aspirations, embodying the artist’s years of dedicated study of classical Chinese literature, music, calligraphy, and painting. This artistic cultivation forms the foundation of his sculptures’ inner meaning, as evidenced by works such as *Yunshan Fengdu* (2012) and *Shenjiang* (2016). Ren Zhe’s creative spirit is deeply rooted in the soil of Chinese art, manifested through media such as cement, steel, and bronze.
Since 2005, Ren Zhe has gained attention and acclaim in the Asian and international auction markets. His works are collected by numerous art institutions worldwide and have won multiple international awards. He has held solo exhibitions in mainland China, New York, Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan, with his most notable exhibitions being those at Exchange Square in Hong Kong and the Temple of Heaven in Beijing in 2017 and 2019.
