Leng Joon Wong (凌运凰) — Artistic Journey (Summary)

Leng Joon Wong (b. 1947, China; moved to Singapore at 9) is a celebrated Singaporean watercolourist, often called “the people’s artist” for his vivid depictions of everyday life. Despite financial and familial challenges, he graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (1964) and chose watercolour as his lifelong medium.

In 1964, he co-founded the Singapore Watercolour Society with Chen Chong Swee and Chan Soon Guan, helping to establish watercolour as a respected art form in Singapore. His works, marked by strong perspective, mastery of light, and colour transitions, capture urban life, historical landmarks, and vanishing scenes of Singapore.

Drawing influence from both Western and Chinese masters, his style blends realism with impressionism. He values constant artistic evolution, balancing spontaneity with precision, and often cautions against creative stagnation.

His works are held in major collections, including the Singapore National Museum Art Gallery, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Parliament House, and private institutions worldwide.

More than a painter, Leng is a pioneer, educator, and advocate of watercolour in Singapore. His legacy lies not only in his art, but also in his dedication to nurturing younger generations and preserving Singapore’s cultural memory.
