Lim Tze Peng 林子平（1921–2025）

 Lim Tze Peng was one of Singapore’s most distinguished second-generation artists and a key figure in the country’s modern art history. His practice spanned ink painting, calligraphy, and modernist experimentation. He was especially renowned for his poetic depictions of Singapore’s urban and cultural landscapes, including Chinatown, the Singapore River, and traditional Malay kampungs.

In recognition of his artistic achievements, he received a Special Award at the Commonwealth Art Exhibition in the United Kingdom in 1977. In 2003, he was awarded the Cultural Medallion for Visual Arts by the President of Singapore. In his later years, he developed a distinctive abstract calligraphic style known as hutuzi (“muddled characters”), rooted in the spirit of traditional Chinese calligraphy yet expressive of contemporary sensibilities. His works are held in the collections of major public institutions and art organizations in Singapore.

Lim Tze Peng stands as an outstanding representative of Singapore’s second generation of artists. Working across ink painting, calligraphy, and modern painting, he became widely known for capturing collective urban memories through scenes of Chinatown, the Singapore River, and Malay kampungs. His pioneering hutuzi style fused classical calligraphic traditions with a bold contemporary visual language. Many of his works have been acquired by important institutions, affirming his lasting influence on Singapore’s art landscape.
